Both drugs are known to inhibit complex I of the mitochondrial electron transport chain provoking a decrease of the ATP reserve.7 Interestingly, Hb accumulates in the mitochondria of post mortem brain tissues of other diseases such as multiple sclerosis (MS), where it interacts with several mitochondrial proteins, including ATP synthase subunits.40 The gene discussed is GSTM1; the disease is multiple sclerosis.
