Diagnostic criteria for epoetin-induced pure red cell aplasia (PRCA) are treatment with recombinant erythropoietin for at least several weeks, weekly drop hemoglobin of 1 g/dL or transfusion need 1 U per week, reticulocyte below 1%, normal platelets and leukocyte count, skin or systemic reactions, bone marrow with <5% erythroblasts and presence of anti-erythropoietin antibodies in serum, increased percent of transferrin saturation and levels of serum ferritin (1,7). This evidence concerns the gene EPO and pure red-cell aplasia.
