TNF and leukemia: For instance, erythroid cells derived from human erythroleukaemia K562 cell line were susceptible to apoptosis induced by TNF, but not hemozoin, while those cells derived from normal peripheral blood CD34+ cells were only susceptible to hemozoin-induced apoptosis, suggesting that these compounds interfere in the development of erythroid cells through distinct pathways, with hemozoin inducing apoptosis and TNF triggering non-apoptotic mechanisms in healthy (non-leukemia) cells.
