BRAF and neoplasm: In a recent analysis of BRAF mutation testing using amplification refractory mutation system (ARMS) methodology on cfDNA isolated from either serum or plasma collected from advanced melanoma patients, a greater amount of total cfDNA was isolated from serum vs plasma (using the QIAamp Circulating Nucleic Acid Kit (Qiagen) for each blood sample type); however, the proportion of tumour-derived mutant cfDNA was significantly greater in plasma than in serum (approximately 2 × higher) (Aung et al, 2014).
