These findings prompted us to test the activity of muscarinic ligands in prion disease, where we determined that the prion-mediated deficit in learning and memory was completely restored by the muscarinic receptor agonist xanomeline (28, 29) as well as by the highly selective M1 mAChR PAMs benzyl quinolone carboxylic acid (BQCA) (30–32) and benzoquinazoline-12 (BQZ-12) (33). This evidence concerns the gene CHRM1 and prion disease.
