The mechanisms responsible for the thrombocytopaenia of cirrhosis include splenic sequestration of platelets in portal hypertension [23, 24], suppression of platelet production in the bone marrow [25, 26] and decreased activity of the hematopoietic growth factor, thrombopoietin [27], which is produced primarily in the liver.
