Adiponectin is, mainly secreted by adipocytes, with plasma concentrations inversely correlated with insulin resistance, type-2 diabetes and obesity.11 Adiponectin has insulin-sensitising and anti-inflammatory properties and an ability to enhance pancreatic β-cells regeneration.16 Though adiponectin is mainly secreted by SCAT, Drolet et al.17 found that the OMAT release of adiponectin was reduced with increasing BMI, total body fat mass and visceral AT area, suggesting that OMAT could be responsible for the hypoadiponectinemia associated with obesity. This evidence concerns the gene INS and type 2 diabetes mellitus.
