For instance, miR-34a expression is upregulated in patients with bipolar disorder, and the 25 predicted targets of miR-34a, including the voltage-dependent L-type calcium channel subunits CACNB3 and CACNA1C, overlap with the 140 risk genes identified in genome-wide association studies of bipolar disorder (Bavamian et al., 2015).
