Although Newbury and Community PCT appealed against NICE's draft guidance published on 9 July, this was swiftly rejected by a NICE review panel (NICE 2006a) and final guidance was issued on 23 August recommending Herceptin for treatment ‘for women with early-stage HER2-positive breast cancer following surgery, chemotherapy (neoadjuvant or adjuvant) and radiotherapy (if applicable)’ (NICE 2006b, 4). The gene discussed is ERBB2; the disease is breast cancer.
