These inflammatory cells produce pro-inflammatory cytokines such as tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNFα) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) [35] which mediate contractile dysfunction [36, 37] and create a low-grade inflammatory environment in which the metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular disease, and insulin resistance are prone to develop [16, 17, 34]. The gene discussed is TNF; the disease is metabolic syndrome.
