LOX-1 is a 50-kD transmembrane protein highly expressed on macrophages, vascular smooth muscle cells, and especially endothelial cells, which plays important roles in the pathogenesis of diabetic cardiovascular complications, myocardial ischemia, and atherosclerosis (Lu and Mehta, 2011; Yan et al., 2011; Xu et al., 2013b). The gene discussed is OLR1; the disease is atherosclerosis.
