La Cava et al. (28) demonstrated that the production of autoantibodies by B cells in SLE patients could be interrupted via induction of regulatory T cells, and the regulatory T cells could inhibit the production of dsDNA antibodies by B cells via cell contact inhibition induced by membrane-bound TGF-β and Glucocorticoid-induced tumour necrosis factor receptor (GITR) molecules. The gene discussed is TNFRSF18; the disease is systemic lupus erythematosus.
