All of these features of chondroitin sulfate were used to fabricate a mesoporous silica‐based vector loaded with a plasmid carrying the gene for the p53 protein.314 A more than twofold increase in translated messenger RNA for p53 was observed in treated cancer cell lines, when the silica‐based vector was coated with chondroitin sulfate compared to bare mesoporous silica–plasmid conjugate.314 Gene therapy induced expression of healthy p53 protein in human cancer cells inhibits tumor growth; thus, the above‐described vector represents another possible way for cancer treatment.
