For metastatic disease, unfortunately only a tiny percentage of mucosal melanomas show a BRAF mutation; therefore it is usually not appropriate to use BRAF inhibitors, so chemotherapy in the form of biological agents has to depend on immunotherapy with ipilimumab24 or the newer agents such as pembrolizumab, although to date there has been no specific study of the latter agent's efficacy specifically in mucosal melanoma. The gene discussed is BRAF; the disease is mucosal melanoma.
