Recently, the EMPA-REG OUTCOME trial [12–14], which examined the effect of empagliflozin, a sodium glucose-cotransporter 2 inhibitor, in addition to standard therapy on cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in patients with type 2 diabetes at high risk, provided the findings that compared to placebo, empagliflozin significantly reduced the combined cardiovascular endpoint, cardiovascular death, overall mortality, and heart failure hospitalization. Here, SLC5A2 is linked to type 2 diabetes mellitus.
