Despite the controversy about Gal-3 knockout mice and kidney injury, several studies using Gal-3 inhibitors have pointed out the protective effects of Gal-3 blockade in numerous pathological conditions such as cancer [21], cardiac fibrosis [13, 22, 23], vascular fibrosis [11], liver fibrosis [24], pulmonary fibrosis [25], adipose tissue fibrosis [26] and renal fibrosis [11–13]. This evidence concerns the gene LGALS3 and renal fibrosis.
