For some unknown reason, the neutralizing antibodies against GM-CSF appear to be a greater risk for cryptococcosis due to C. gattii than C. neoformans. This etiologic agent’s difference in the prevalence of GM-CSF neutralizing antibodies among otherwise healthy cryptococcosis patients may offer an important clue in order to address the differences in the host’s immunological response to the two pathogens.
