We further confirmed X. fragariae identity of a subset of FaP isolates (1) by PCR analysis using X. fragariae-specific primers q241, q245, and q295 (Turechek et al., 2008) (Figure 1A), (2) by X. fragariae-specific MLSA (Young et al., 2008) revealing 100% identity with published fyuA, gyrB, rpoD, and 16s rRNA gene sequences from X. fragariae ATCC 29076 (EU498875, EU498979, EU499098, and X95920, respectively), and (3) for the ability to produce ALS symptoms (Figure 1B) after leaf inoculation of strawberry plants (Fragaria × ananassa cultivar ‘Portola’). The gene discussed is FAP; the disease is amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
