Insulin treatment (OR 4.40, 95%CI 1.96, 9.85), inadequate refill of GLD before death/index date (OR 3.87, 95%CI 1.99, 7.53), poor glycaemic control (OR 2.00, 95%CI 1.23, 3.27), a history of psychiatric illness (OR 2.30, 95%CI 1.32, 4.01) or microvascular disease (OR 3.26, 95%CI 1.84, 5.79) were risk factors that at least doubled the odds ratio for fatal hyperglycaemia.
