Oxidative stress may activate inflammatory response of endothelial cells and induce the release of various cytokines such as interleukin-1 (IL-1), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), IL-6, IL-4, chemokines (IL-8 etc.)and cell adhesion molecules (e.g., intercellular adhesion molecule-1 [ICAM-1], E-selectin etc.), leading to infiltration of inflammatory cells through endothelial cells into tissue and contributing to atherosclerosis [9]. The gene discussed is TNF; the disease is atherosclerosis.
