This distinguishes CD36 from other scavenger receptors, e.g., those of class A. Additionally, S100A12 and CD36 are expressed in similar cell types, and more interestingly, the dysregulation of S100A12 and CD36 is related to similar pathological outcomes like atherosclerosis (Goyette et al. 2009; Park 2014). Here, S100A12 is linked to atherosclerosis.
