People with a history of depression have been reported to be at an increased risk of dementia,30 and interestingly, antihypertensives targeting the renin–angiotensin system have recently shown a possible reduction in the incidence and progression of Alzheimer disease.31 A recent systematic review including >1 million individuals found that all antihypertensive drugs had benefits on overall cognition, with ARB being more effective than ACEi.32 This evidence concerns the gene REN and major depressive disorder.
