In patient with hypercholesterolemia, statins were instrumental in reducing the progression of atherosclerosis by inhibiting of monocyte activation, enhancing metalloprotease synthesis in the vessel walls and the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines interleukin (IL)-6, tumor necrosis factors (TNFα) and IL-1β [15,16]. This evidence concerns the gene TNF and familial hypercholesterolemia.
