The co-existence of TBBPA-induced increases in [Ca2+]i and ROS production, with depolarization of the mitochondria and cytochrome c release, were demonstrated previously using the SH-SY5Y human neuroblastoma cell line [8]; however, to our knowledge, the present study is the first to show the direct causal relationship between calcium transients and mitochondrial depolarization in neurons treated with low μM concentrations of TBBPA. This evidence concerns the gene CYCS and neuroblastoma.
