Myeloma plasma cells induce angiogenesis directly via the secretion of angiogenic cytokines, such as VEGF and fibroblast growth factor-2 (FGF-2), and indirectly by induction of host inflammatory cell infiltration, and degrade the extracellular matrix with their matrix degrading enzymes, such as matrix metalloproteinase-2 and -9 (MMP-2 and MMP-9) and urokinase-type plasminogen activator [8]. Here, FGF2 is linked to plasma cell myeloma.
