AKT1 and Parkinson disease: For example, we have recently shown that adult dopamine neurons of the mesencephalon, which are predominantly affected in human Parkinson’s disease (PD), can be induced to grow new axons following transduction with constitutively active forms of the kinase Akt or the GTPase hRheb.2,3 These observations provide an experimental basis for a new approach to neurorestoration for PD.
