While dystroglycan has been most extensively studied in its association with the dystrophin complex and muscular dystrophies, it is broadly expressed and implicated in regulating many cellular processes, including BM assembly, cell migration, axon outgrowth, retinal layering, and Schwann cell wrapping (Bello et al., 2015; Moore and Winder, 2010). This evidence concerns the gene DMD and muscular dystrophy.
