Troglitazone induced PPARγ levels selectively in the liver under pathophysiological conditions, and severe steatosis may result in the accumulation of the drug in lipid-rich hepatocytes, with subsequent lipid peroxidation, and predispose the liver to the development of fibrosis (Bedoucha et al. 2001; Boelsterli and Bedoucha 2002).
