Several novel biomarkers such as human neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL), kidney injury molecule 1 (KIM-1), N-acetyl beta glucosaminidase (NAG), interleukin 18 (IL-18), insulin like growth factor-binding protein 7 (IGFBP7) and tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases-2 (TIMP-2) are being used to diagnose acute kidney injury [29] and their use in chronic kidney disease was evident in Mesoamerican nephropathy [30, 31]. The gene discussed is TIMP2; the disease is acute kidney injury.
