While no information on the biological role of this last metabolite is known or available to the authors, except for a recent associations with single nucleotide polymorphisms in FADS1-3 loci (encoding fatty acid desaturases)12, increased nitrotyrosine levels are generally recognized as markers of inflammation/oxidative stress, and so far detected in inflammatory bowel disease and other conditions of increased intestinal permeability13, 14.
