PML and infection: Several hypotheses arose from these data: (i) ICP0 is less efficient in inducing the degradation of centromeric proteins than PML in mouse neurons, (ii) ICP0 is synthesized in, but does not reach the nucleus of, infected neurons, (iii) ICP0 is not efficiently synthesized in neurons, (iv) some neurons lack PML-NBs and are more susceptible to lytic infection even in the absence of functional ICP0.
