At the high end of metabolic demand, detrimental consequences of stress-evoked release of NE may derive from multiple factors, including the simultaneous abnormal release of cytokines—particularly interleukin 6 (IL-6; Li et al., 2015)—which by itself may lead to a wide array of psychiatric consequences from depression to psychosis and anxiety disorders (Atzori et al., 2012). This evidence concerns the gene IL6 and major depressive disorder.
