In AML, evidence of the ability of CLEC12A to distinguish between the LSC and its normal counterpart, the HSC, was, to a certain extent, raised by van Rhenen et al (2007a,b), who showed that sorted CD34+CD38−CLEC12A+ cells were malignant by FISH, while the CD34+CD38−CLEC12A− cells proved negative for the AML‐specific cytogenetic abnormalities. The gene discussed is CLEC12A; the disease is acute myeloid leukemia.
