Consistent with this notion, we found that GLAST mRNA abundance was greater in CBA mouse cochleae than in those from CD-1 mice (CBA: 1.02 ± 0.06 relative expression level; CD-1: 0.76 ± 0.04; p = 0.008 by an unpaired two-tailed t-test, n = 5 per strain), which correlates with these strains’ known auditory sensitivity and development of age-related hearing loss. The gene discussed is SLC1A3; the disease is presbycusis.
