It has been demonstrated that IGFBP-3 restricts IGF-1 availability and biological activity [32] and thus, low levels of IGFBP-3 have been associated with an increased risk of breast cancer [33] and a poorer prognosis and have been postulated as predictors of distant recurrence of breast carcinoma in postmenopausal women [1, 34].
