Necroptosis is a regulated form of necrosis mediated by receptor-interacting protein kinases (RIPK).14 In contrast to apoptosis, necroptosis is characterized by ATP depletion, rupture of the plasma membrane, and release of necroptosis-specific cytokine HMGB1 to activate inflammatory response.15,16 Owing to the different implications in inflammatory response between apoptosis and necroptosis, to develop targeted therapy for AMD, it is crucial to clarify the mechanism of RPE cell death in response to oxidative stress and in AMD. Here, HMGB1 is linked to age-related macular degeneration.
