In contrast to older glucose‐lowering medications (sulphonylureas, insulin, thiazolidinediones) that cause body weight gain,5 newer treatments for type 2 diabetes (T2D) are associated with body weight loss, including selective sodium‐glucose co‐transporter‐2 (SGLT2) inhibitors (e.g. dapagliflozin, empagliflozin) and glucagon‐like peptide‐1 receptor agonists (GLP‐1RAs; e.g. exenatide, liraglutide). This evidence concerns the gene SLC5A2 and type 2 diabetes mellitus.
