The first genome-wide association study (GWAS) of NAFLD performed by Romeo et al. (2008) identified that rs738409 G allele of the patatin-like phospholipase domain-containing-3 (PNPLA3) is significantly associated with increased hepatic fat levels and susceptibility to NAFLD. Here, PNPLA3 is linked to metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease.
