We have recently demonstrated that Caco-2 cells with marginal zinc deficiency respond to the inflammatory cytokine TNFα undergoing a gradual increase in cell monolayer permeability that can easily be monitored by measuring the decrease in trans-epithelial electrical resistance (TEER) [25], a characteristic parameter of epithelial cell layers, reflecting the functionality of the tight junctions and the integrity of the cell monolayer. This evidence concerns the gene TNF and Zinc deficiency.
