Mycobacteria delivered into phagolysosomes by opsonization or by co-infection with the lysosomally localized bacterium Coxiella burnetti survived and even replicated in lysosomes, whereas bacteria reaching lysosomes following IFNγ stimulation of the macrophages were killed (Armstrong and Hart, 1975, Cosma et al., 2003, Gomes et al., 1999).
