Inflammation in COPD is associated with an inflammatory infiltrate composed of eosinophils, macrophages, neutrophils, and CD8+ T lymphocytes in all lung compartments (Henderson et al., 2002) along with inflammatory mediators such as TNF-α, IL-8 (interleukin- 8), LTB4 (Leucotriene B4), ET-1 (Endothelin-1) and increased expression of several adhesion molecules such as ICAM-1 (Woodside and Vanderslice, 2008). Here, CXCL8 is linked to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
