Some of the identified causes of familial ALS are mutations in the genes encoding chromosome 9 open reading frame 72 (C9ORF72), fused in sarcoma (FUS), TAR DNA-binding protein 43 (TDP-43, also known as TARDBP) and super oxide dismutase 1 (SOD1) (DeJesus-Hernandez et al., 2011; Kwiatkowski et al., 2009; Vance et al., 2009; Arai et al., 2006; Rosen et al., 1993). Here, TARDBP is linked to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
