TFRC and breast carcinoma: Transferrin receptor 1 mediates most of the cellular iron uptake by binding iron-transferrin at cell surface, which is internalized by receptor-mediated endocytosis; release and reduction of the iron in endosomes and transport of the released iron into the cytosol.40, 41 Recently, under starvation conditions, it was shown transferrin import is required for ferroptosis and could be important in ischemia/reperfusion induced heart injury.42 Erastin-induced cell death was however independent of ferroportin and transferrin in breast cancer cells.
