In human AD cases, decreased NGF levels have been shown in the nucleus basalis of Meynert [126], a group of neurons in the basal forebrain which has wide ascending projections to the neocortex, is rich in acetylcholine (Ach) and choline acetyltransferase (ChAT), and is well known to undergo degeneration in AD [127].
