PRDX1 and cancer: In short, the long term consequences of PRDX1 functional loss are (i) the accumulation of ROS-induced oxidized DNA base lesions that might not be efficiently repaired by APE1 leading to genomic instability, as under these conditions APE1 could be targeted for its redox role, and (ii) the induction of IL-8 that has the ability to stimulate cancer cells invasion and metastasis.
