PGLS and malaria: Although the underlying genetic mechanisms are not completely clear, mechanisms suggested are impaired growth of P. falciparum parasites in G6PD deficient red blood cells [40] and slow rates of parasite replication [41, 42], more efficient clearance of infected red blood cells [43], and lower abundance of P. falciparum 6-phosphogluconolactonase mRNA in parasites from G6PD deficient individuals [44] both uncomplicated and severe malaria.
