Despite being recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) for blocking P. falciparum transmission and for preventing Plasmodium vivax relapses, primaquine has not been used widely in malaria-endemic areas due to concerns about causing acute haemolytic anaemia in patients with glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency [13].
