GFAP has been revealed to be an extremely sensitive and non-specific indication of retinal damage and the initiation of gliosis, as indicated by its upregulation in the retina in: glaucoma, ischemia- reperfusion, retinal detachment, diabetic retinopathy, inflammation, and proliferative retinopathies [9].
