CALCA and Shock: Ina cohort study involving 75 patients, 63 with septic shock and 12 with cardiogenicshock, the PCT levels at the time of inclusion were significantly higher in patientswith sepsis; a cutoff value of 6ng/mL distinguished survivors in the ICU fromnon-survivors in the group of patients with sepsis and yielded a sensitivity of87.5% and a specificity of 45%.(22) However, the levels of PCT during the first days of antibiotictreatment seem to predict the prognosis more accurately than measurements at anyother single time point.
