BCL2 and leukemia: Intriguingly, pharmacologic inhibition of FAO using etomoxir – a substituted 2-oxirane-carboxylic acid that inhibits carnitine palmitoyl CoA transferase 1 – rapidly and almost completely inhibited oxygen consumption and sensitized leukemia cells to induction of apoptosis by the bcl-2 inhibitor ABT-737, in vitro and in xenograft models [7], substantiating the idea that mitochondrial oxidative metabolism supports leukemia cell survival.
